Headaches and dizziness are complaints that occur regularly, whether or not in combination with neck pain.
Dizziness gives a feeling of vertigo or balance problems. Sometimes people associate this with feeling 'light-headed' or disoriented, often in combination with insecurity in motion.
Within the fysioIn therapy, we distinguish between being dizzy or feeling light-headed, where (rotary) dizziness is often associated with problems of the vestibular system. In addition, you may feel as if the world revolves around you, accompanied by the feeling of a reduced balance. This does not always have to have its origin in the balance organ, but can also be traced back to an imbalance in the cervical spine.
'Light-headed' is often the feeling of faintness. We often see a connection with the blood circulation or blood vessels, medication or sometimes also with stress, for example with hyperventilation.
In some cases of dizziness, the manual therapist can play a role in the recovery. For example, with dizziness complaints that have a cause in the cervical spine or with some balance organ-related dizziness, namely Benign Paradoxal Position Dizziness, or BPPD.
However, if you suddenly become dizzy or light-headed and this is accompanied by neurological or central symptoms, it is advisable to consult your doctor. Think of failure symptoms, sudden falls, double vision, speech or swallowing disorders, acute wooden movements or tingling / deafness in the face.
Except for the treatment of dizziness complaints, the fysio-/manual therapist also play a role in the treatment of headache complaints. Especially with headache types that originate from muscles or joints in the neck, viz tension-type headache either muscle tension headache and cervicogenic headache, i.e. headache complaints from the neck.
